What is Modern?

What is Modern?

The term itself is defined within the bounds of time. Modernity is new, but can also originate from the old. It can encompass elements of the past, present and future simultaneously. It can express simplicity or complexity.

The ideas it generates are diverse in that the term means many things different things when applied to different concepts. This makes the term complicated enough to dedicate an exhibit at the Denver Art Museum to. The exhibit has been running since November of 2010 and the name ponders the very question of the term itself, “What is Modern?

The exhibit features “imaginative” designs, both industrial and graphic, and furniture that spans two centuries. The subjects represent a time-line of forward thinking and showcase many examples of different methods, mediums and materials that reflect what it means to be modern.

The exhibit is in it’s final six months. If you have not had a chance to see it yet, make sure you don’t miss this wonderful insight into what it means to be modern in today’s art scene. If you happen to be a resident of Colorado, the Art Museum is free on the following dates: October 6th, 2012; November 3rd, 2012; December 1st 2012. Enjoy this unique opportunity to see hundreds of years worth of cutting edge design.
